Olympic champion Zhang Yufei added a fourth gold medal to her collection on the penultimate day of China's national swimming championships in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, on Friday.
Competing as Team Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Jiangxi-Shandong, which is a combination of the municipality and provinces, Zhang claimed her latest victory in the mixed 4x100m medley relay with teammates Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang and Yang Junxun, who are all dominant forces individually as either Olympic or World champions. The quartet clocked a winning time of 3:41.82.
Three years ago in this event at the Tokyo Olympics, the Chinese quartet of Zhang, Xu, Yang and Yan Zibei finished as runners-up with a time of 3:38.86.
Qin, who substituted Yan, emerged as a dominant force in the breaststroke event in recent years and won the men's overall title in last year's World Cup series.
In other matches on Friday, Wang Changhao won the men's 100m butterfly in 51.20 seconds, Li Bingjie won the women's 800m freestyle in 8:25.43, and Yu Yiting won the women's 200m medley in 2:09.73.
The national swimming championships, which also serves as a qualifying tournament for Paris 2024, concludes on Saturday. The match schedule of nine days was designed to simulate the actual schedule of the Paris Games for Chinese swimmers to warm up and seize the last chance to earn their berths.
