The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor program is one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world today. Multiple nations are collaborating to build the world's largest tokamak. It's a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy. Our reporter Liu Jiaxin speaks with Sergio Orlandi, Construction Project Head of ITER Organization on the latest progress and China's contribution.

LIU JIAXIN, CGTN Reporter "Dr. Orlandi, good to have you with us on CGTN. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor program, known as ITER, is one of the largest and most far-reaching international scientific cooperation projects in the world. Could you please give us a brief introduction about the latest progress of ITER?"

SERGIO ORLANDI, Head of ITER Construction Project, ITER Organization "ITER has made important progress in the last six years, achieving very high top level targets. Because all the plant outside of the tokamak building has been completed. So I can say that the electrical power distribution, the coil power supply with the big contribution coming from China in the building territory as well as the Component Cooling water system have been completed, commissioned and the majority of them are in operation."

LIU JIAXIN, CGTN Reporter "In ITER program, China undertook the design and manufacturing work of 18 critical components and has additionally undertaken some other major assembly tasks. What's your opinion on Chinese teams' work performance?"

SERGIO ORLANDI, Head of ITER Construction Project, ITER Organization "I have been working in China since 1988. I have Learned a lot. The mentality that I have had from China to be capable to assure quality on time and on cost. And this mentality makes the difference in any project. I've seen the capacity they have, I've seen how they work because for sure if you come in ITER you see building territory is totally of power converters produced by China. They are completed, they are installed."

LIU JIAXIN, CGTN Reporter "ITER program over the course of the past 2 decades has promoted the development of Magnetic Confinement Fusion related areas. When do you think the commercialization of nuclear fusion energy will be achieved?"

SERGIO ORLANDI, Head of ITER Construction Project, ITER Organization "What I can say is that I would like to see that before passing away. I'm old so I'm thinking of something that can happen shortly, but not so short. Don't create illusion, we have to work hard and hard. ITER and all fusion is already winning because many technologies or scientific discoveries we have done for fusion technology are going to be extensively applied in transversal activities, technology of vacuum, technology of cryo, technology of superconductivity and making life simple in all the field of our life."
