Glutinous rice cakes are an essential part of any festive occasion in the Chaoshan region of southern China. Historically, when migrants from Chaoshan set sail for foreign shores, they always took glutinous rice cakes with them as a source of sustenance and to bring them good luck. The family of "Sister Li," through their well-known shop, are keeping alive the unique cultural traditions associated with glutinous rice cakes.
