China firmly opposes U.S. attempt to invite Taiwan region to WHA as observer

China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to the United States' attempts to invite China's Taiwan island to participate as an observer at this year's World Health Assembly (WHA), a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

The spokesperson made the remarks in response to the recent statement issued by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in which he said the United States "strongly encourages" the World Health Organization (WHO) to invite the Taiwan region to attend the WHA as an observer.

Reiterating that the Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations, the spokesperson urged the United States to stop using the WHA to hype up Taiwan-related issues and refrain from sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces.
