Leading Chinese electric automaker NIO aims to speed up the expansion of the country's battery swapping network. The service allows electric vehicle users to quickly exchange used-up batteries for fully charged ones, as an alternative to recharging cars at a station. In an interview with CGTN at the Beijing Auto Show, the company's Senior Vice President Shen Fei said the largest room for improvement lies in transforming NIO's battery swapping network into an industry-wide shared ecosystem involving business models, technology and operations. "We also need to enhance service capabilities, and optimize the cost of individual products, while utilizing battery swapping stations as energy storage units to contribute to the stability and security of the grid. Small improvements involve enhancing the performance, optimizing costs and expanding the functionality of battery swapping stations. The larger improvement entails integrating them into the entire new energy vehicle industry, and utilizing them as energy devices to optimize the power supply within the grid," he added.
