Today, Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding is a famous shipyard with an annual production of millions of units. But few people realize that it stands on the original site of a Qing Empire navy yard. In 1866, the Qing government cooperated with France to establish the Foochow Arsenal in Fuzhou, which became the cradle of China's modern maritime education and navy.
