The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Executive Committee announced on Friday that 26-man squads will be allowed for the upcoming Euro 2024, with the deadline set at June 7 for participating teams to submit rosters of a minimum 23 players each.

The expansion from 23 to 26 was first introduced for the last edition of the European Championships as a countermeasure to cope with the pandemic in the summer of 2021.

It was again introduced at the Qatar World Cup that took place in December 2022, as the tournament was in the window of multiple domestic leagues that were put on pause for the quadrennial event.

The sport's European governing body had considered resuming the 23-man rule for Euro 2024, but the extension of the new rule is welcomed by managers whose teams suffer from injury-hit shortages such as England's Gareth Southgate.

Euro 2024 will run from June 14 to July 14 across 10 cities in Germany, with the opener set to take place in Munich between Scotland and hosts Germany, and the final showdown in Berlin's Olympiastadion.
