China saw about 295 million domestic tourist trips during the May Day holiday from May 1 to 5, up 7.6 percent year on year and 28.2 percent from the same period in 2019, data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism showed Monday.

Domestic tourists spent a total of 166.89 billion yuan (roughly $23 billion), an increase of 12.7 percent year on year and 13.5 percent compared with the same period in 2019.

Many cities saw robust tourism during the five-day holiday.

Beijing received about 16.97 million tourists and achieved a tourism revenue of 19.62 billion yuan (around $2.7 billion) during the period, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism. This marked a year-on-year increase of 9.4 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively, both reaching historical highs for the same period. Data indicated that the top tourist destinations in the city included historical attractions, business districts and parks.

North China's Tianjin Municipality received a total of 14 million tourists, up 27.5 percent from the same period last year, according to the Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism. Its tourism revenue reached 12.2 billion yuan (about $1.7 billion) during the holiday.

Meanwhile, inbound and outbound tourism recovered rapidly, with the resumption of air routes, the implementation of entry facilitation measures and the increase in the number of countries with mutual visa exemption.

Data showed that the total number of inbound and outbound tourists during the May Day holiday reached 3.67 million, with inbound tourists accounting for over 48 percent.
