U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on Sunday on the "ongoing hostage negotiations, humanitarian assistance efforts and Rafah," the Pentagon said in a statement.
Gallant said the Israeli military action in Rafah was required because Hamas had rejected hostage-release proposals.
