Vladimir Putin was sworn in for his fifth term as Russian president on Tuesday at the Kremlin inauguration, beginning another six-year tenure.

Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) on October 7, 1952, Putin graduated from Leningrad State University in 1975 and served in the Soviet Union's State Security Committee (KGB).

After returning to the Soviet Union in 1990, Putin worked in various roles in St. Petersburg and Moscow, including positions in the city government and the Presidential Executive Office. He became prime minister in August 1999 and became acting president of Russia upon Boris Yeltsin's resignation on December 31, 1999.

Putin won the presidential election on March 26, 2000, and was re-elected to a second term on March 14, 2004. He then served as Prime Minister of Russia from 2008 to 2012.

In March 2012, Putin won the presidential election, and he was re-elected as President of Russia in 2018. In March 2024, he ran as an independent candidate in the presidential election.
