May 12 marks International Nurses Day. China saw a surge in registered nurses last year, reaching four nurses per 1,000 people, according to data released by the National Health Commission. 

The total number of registered nurses in China reached 5.63 million by the end of 2023, a rise of about 430,000 from 2022. The country's nurses are increasingly educated, with more than 80 percent holding a college degree or higher by the end of 2023.
