Newly elected prime minister of Solomon Islands, Jeremiah Manele has described the decision to establish diplomatic relations with China as the most significant choice made by the country since gaining independence over 45 years ago, reaffirming the country's commitment to the one-China principle.

The former foreign minister assumed office as prime minister of the Solomon Islands earlier this month after winning the support of 31 legislators in the 50-seat parliament.
