Nearly 300 of these dwellings cling picturesquely to the mountainside, exuding a unique charm reminiscent of ancient mountain settlements. Their history stretches back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), with most structures built during the middle and late Qing Dynasty period and after.

Unlike traditional Chinese villages, Xujiashan eschews brick or clay in favor of local stone. These stones, with a distinctive copper hue, are called "bronze slates" by the villagers. Skillfully assembled, they form not just houses, but also bridges, roads, benches and gardens.
