China and the United States on Tuesday held the first meeting of the inter-governmental dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI) in Geneva.

The two sides had an in-depth, professional and constructive exchange of views on the risks of AI, global governance and other issues of concern.

The two sides shared their views on the risks of AI and governance measures as well as ways to promote AI's development from a socioeconomic perspective.

The Chinese side emphasized that it regards AI as one of the most significant emerging technologies today. China adheres to the concept of putting people first and ensuring that the technology is beneficial, safe and fair, it said.

China supports strengthening global governance of AI, advocates the role of the United Nations as the main channel, and stands ready to strengthen communication and coordination with the international community, including the U.S., to form a global framework and standards for AI governance with broad consensus.

The Chinese side also made clear its solemn position on the U.S. restrictions and repression on China in the field of AI.

Both sides recognized that there are both opportunities and risks in the development of AI and reaffirmed their continued commitment to implement the important consensus reached by the two presidents in San Francisco.
