The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that China is ready to continue to work with the international community to promote a comprehensive, just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue at an early date.

Wednesday marks the 76th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba day, or the day of "catastrophe," the day after Israel declared its independence in 1948.

According to the United Nations, nearly 450,000 Palestinians have left Rafah as Israel expands its offensive in the southern city in the Gaza Strip.

In response, at a regular press briefing, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the ministry, said more than half of the Palestinians fled or were driven from their homes during the Arab-Israeli war 76 years ago.

"Today, 76 years later, the historical injustice suffered by the Palestinian people not only hasn't been corrected but has been further exacerbated," Wang said.

Stressing that China firmly opposes the expansion of the conflict to Rafah and the collective punishment of the people of Gaza, he said China backs the establishment of an independent state of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty based on the 1967 borders and with east Jerusalem as its capital, and supports Palestine in becoming a full member state of the UN.

China will continue to work with the international community to ultimately realize Israeli-Palestinian peaceful coexistence and harmonious coexistence of the Arab and Jewish nations, Wang said.
