Lawrence Wong was inaugurated as Singapore's new prime minister at a ceremony on Wednesday after Lee Hsien Loong stepped down after two decades in office.

Wong, 51, said in his inauguration speech that he is the first Singaporean prime minister to be born after the country's independence, adding that most members of the People's Action Party's fourth-generation team were also born after 1965.

He said their experiences were based on values that forged Singapore: incorruptibility, meritocracy, multiracialism, justice, and equality.

"Shaped by these experiences, our leadership style will differ from that of previous generations. We will lead in our own way. We will continue to think boldly and to think far."

Wong said he was taking over at a challenging time with an uncertain external environment that was in flux, saying that Singapore was strong but vulnerable to external influences "that tug us in different directions."

"We understand the vital importance of good leadership, political stability and long-term planning. We ourselves are the beneficiaries of the imaginative policies of our founding fathers, pursued resolutely and patiently over decades," he added.

Wong made a minor cabinet reshuffle on Monday, promoting the trade minister Gan Kim Yong to become his deputy, noting that continuity and stability were key considerations.

He has pledged a bigger reshuffle after an election due by next year. Lee will remain in the new cabinet as senior minister, as former Singaporean prime ministers have.
