Chinese President Xi Jinping pays a state visit to France as both countries mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations. Both countries share a profound desire for independence in an atmosphere of mutual respect, rejecting double standards and herd mentality. In an interview for The Hub in Paris, Zhang Weiwei, dean of the China Institute at Fudan University, tells Wang Guan that the timing of Xi's visit to Paris is significant after French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech at the Sorbonne, in which he reiterated the concept of European Union's true strategic autonomy. "China has always been supportive of Europe's independence," Zhang says, underscoring the need for a multipolar world.
