Equipment and reinforcements left France on the evening of May 16 for New Caledonia, as violence continued to rage across the French Pacific territory for the third consecutive day. France imposed a state of emergency in the territory on May 16, boosting security forces' powers to quell its unrest. The state of emergency will be in place for at least 12 days as French military forces are being deployed to protect ports and airports and free up police troops, with the curfew extended until the morning of May 17.
