May 19 is China Tourism Day, which originates from the opening date of "The Travels of Xu Xiake," the famous work by renowned Chinese traveler and geographer Xu Xiake, on May 19, 1613. This year's China Tourism Day theme is "Explore China, Enjoy a Happy Life."
Since China announced a variety of policies and plans, including visa-free travel to citizens of a dozen or so countries, the 72/144-hour visa-free transit policy, and increasing international flights to attract more foreign tourists, there has been clear evidence that the measures are bearing fruit. China's National Immigration Administration (NIA) announced that border ports had processed over 141 million inbound and outbound trips in the first quarter of this year. Among the cross-border trips, over 13 million trips were made by foreign nationals, a 305 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
