Germany's Alexander Zverev won the Italian Open title against Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday, which lifted his ranking to fourth as he finds form upon return ahead of the French Open.

This was the sixth Masters 1000 level title for the 27-year-old, who sustained a serious ankle injury in the semi-final at Roland Garros two years ago against Spain's Rafael Nadal that took him out of the rest of the 2022 season, and the world top 20 after reaching his career peek in June 2022 at No. 2.

"Obviously winning my first ever (Masters title) here in Rome and winning my first after my injury also in Rome, so Rome is a very special place for me. It is a very, very special week," said the third seed who first won in the Italian capital when he was 20 years old.

Masters final debutant Jarry struggled to make his power serves work against Zverev. The two went neck-to-neck in the first set until Zverev broke in the 10th game to take the set. The second set was a repeat of the first where neither was broken as the set went into tiebreak, where Jarry saved three match points before the Tokyo Olympic champion lifted his first championship trophy since the ankle injury.

"He is playing huge and you can see by the players he has beaten here this week, playing incredible tennis," Zverev said of the 24th seed.

"I told him if he continues to play like that he will have many chances at this level. Today I am extremely happy to be the winner.

"The focus is on Paris for sure, but let me enjoy this one for a few days first," he added.
