Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that China opposes the illegal unilateral sanctions imposed on Belarus by the U.S. and other Western countries.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Sergei Aleinik on the sidelines of a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan.

Wang said China supports the Belarusian people in pursuing a development path of their own choice, and opposes external interference in Belarusian internal affairs.

Mutual support on international and multilateral platforms not only safeguards the legitimate rights and interests of both sides, but also international fairness and justice, said Wang, who urged the two sides to strengthen coordination in international and regional mechanisms, such as the United Nations, the SCO and BRICS.

China is willing to work with Belarus to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, intensify mutual political support, deepen Belt and Road Initiative cooperation, and continue close collaboration in international affairs, said the Chinese foreign minister.

For his part, Aleinik said Belarus stands ready to strengthen the synergy of development strategies with China and achieve strategic mutual trust, political cooperation and common economic development.

Belarus will, as always, fully support China's position on issues related to Taiwan, Xinjiang, Xizang and the South China Sea, he stressed.
