On May 20, the Taiwan region's leader wantonly advocated "Taiwan independence," which has aroused the attention of the international community. According to a global online survey conducted by CGTN, nearly 90 percent (89.95 percent) of the respondents firmly support the one-China principle and resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" separatism.
Both the Mainland and Taiwan belong to the one and same China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The international community has long concluded this. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 made it clear that there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, reaffirming the one-China principle. Over the past half a century and more since the adoption of the Resolution, the number of countries that have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle has gone up to 183.
In the survey, 86.53 percent of the global respondents believe that no matter what political changes may take place in Taiwan, it cannot change the historical and legal fact that both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one and the same China, and the world's abiding commitment to the one-China principle.
Taiwan is China's Taiwan, and the Taiwan question is China's internal affair, which brooks no external interference. In the survey, 90.21 percent of global respondents strongly condemned the dangerous statement made by Taiwan's leader, pointing out that Taiwan's future can only be determined by more than 1.4 billion Chinese people, including compatriots in Taiwan.
In recent years, the situation in the Taiwan Straits has aroused great concern in the international community, and some countries' involvement in the Taiwan question has aroused widespread worries. According to the poll, as many as 94.78 percent of global respondents express that peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits are crucial to the security and stability of the Asia-Pacific region and the world. A total of 79.12 percent of the respondents strongly oppose the Taiwan authorities' purchase of weapons from the United States, believing that it will push Taiwan into a dangerous situation of military conflict. Another 92.25 percent say that the mainstream public aspiration in the Taiwan region is for peace and development, instead of war and recession. They call on the Taiwan authorities to immediately stop provocative actions.
This poll, published by CGTN in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, received responses from 11,645 people in 24 hours.
