China has launched military drills around its Taiwan region in response to what it regards as pro-independence remarks by the island's new leader. On Monday, Lai Ching-te described Taiwan as a "sovereign, independent nation," which the mainland views as a possible step closer to seeking independence. In response, the Chinese People's Liberation Army on Thursday launched military drills surrounding the island.
