Taiwan Affairs Office says PLA drills a response to Lai's speech

CGTN

China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Thursday that the drills conducted by the Chinese People's Liberation Army surrounding the island of Taiwan serve as a resolute punishment for the provocations made by the Taiwan region's new leader, Lai Ching-te, in his speech on Monday, which was aimed at "independence."

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the office, made the remarks at a press briefing. He added that the drills, which were also stern warnings against external forces that support the "Taiwan independence" agenda and interfere in China's internal affairs, were a just move to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Chen said Lai has rampantly challenged the one-China principle since taking office, advertising the "two-state" theory, trying to promote the internationalization of the Taiwan question and continuing to seek "independence" by relying on foreign countries and by using force.

"We will never tolerate any 'Taiwan independence' separatist acts in any form," Chen stressed.

The spokesperson added that the countermeasures against those separatist activities and interference by external forces "are in no way directed against our compatriots in Taiwan."

He expressed the hope that the Taiwan compatriots will stand firmly on the right side of history and jointly oppose the separatist acts of "Taiwan independence" and the interference of external forces to realize national reunification.
