More than 190 nations have agreed to a new treaty governing patents stemming from "genetic resources" such as medicinal plants, in particular ones whose uses owe a debt to traditional knowledge, the United Nations (UN) announced on Friday.
The World Intellectual Property Organization said that after lengthy negotiations, the delegates approved the "first WIPO Treaty to address the interface between intellectual property, genetic resources and traditional knowledge" to cheers and applause.
