China Global Television Network (CGTN) and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) are set to launch a series of special programs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of China-Malaysia diplomatic relations.

The joint productions will feature three mini-documentaries and two roundtable discussions, presented by anchors and journalists from CGTN and Bernama TV. These programs will explore the historical and contemporary aspects of the China-Malaysia relationship, dating back to the 15th-century voyages of Admiral Zheng He, and highlighting the diplomatic and trade ties developed over the past five decades.

"Both parties are contributing ideas and insights to produce the documentaries," said Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali, Bernama's Head of TV. "Part of the filming was done in China, where Bernama sent a crew for two weeks, while the CGTN crew spent five days in Malaysia for filming."

"Media collaboration is essential in showcasing the 50-year friendship between China and Malaysia," said Zhang He, Deputy Executive Producer at CGTN's Newsgathering department. "By working together, media outlets can provide a balanced perspective on the longstanding relationship and foster mutual understanding between the two countries."

The first roundtable discussion took place in Wulin, south China's Fujian Province -- a village built by Chinese citizens who returned from Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. This setting enriched the historical context of the dialogue, underscoring the enduring connections between the two nations.

"Malaysia has a significant Chinese population with roots in China, and it's important for Chinese Malaysians to connect with their heritage," said Bernama TV presenter Nur Liyana Zulkifli. "Wulin village is an excellent place for the Chinese diaspora in Malaysia to learn about their roots."

The second roundtable was held at the Bernama Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, featuring distinguished panelists such as Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Discussions focused on the thriving diplomatic and trade relations over the past five decades and explored ongoing collaborative efforts in business, education, and tourism.

Abdul Majid Ahmad Khan, President of the Malaysia-China Friendship Association, who was also one of the roundtable panelists in the Malaysian capital, emphasized the significance of media collaboration in strengthening bilateral ties. "The discussion covered all the subjects that reflect the relationship between China and Malaysia in the last 50 years."

The special programs are scheduled to air on CGTN and Bernama TV at the end of May 2024.
