Gulangyu, located off the coast of Xiamen City in southeast China's Fujian Province, is a pedestrian-only island and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The name Gulangyu is the literal translation of Chinese for "drum, wave, islet," as it describes the sound made by waves when they pound the reef, creating a drum-like sound.
