Chinese swimmer Wang Shun is stepping up his preparations for Paris and will be hoping to repeat his peak performance from three years ago when he won gold in the men's 200-meter individual medley in Tokyo.

Wang will compete at his fourth Olympics in Paris. The 30-year-old has made progress step by step in the previous three editions, finishing 22nd on his Olympic debut in London 2012, taking bronze in Rio 2016, before finally topping the podium at Tokyo 2020.

The man from east China's Zhejiang Province further raised his performance at last year's Hangzhou Asian Games, claiming four gold medals, including the 200-meter individual medley title in one minute 54.62 seconds, 0.38 seconds faster than his own result in Tokyo.

The Chinese veteran now has a higher goal to chase as he aims to defend his glory in the French capital two months later.

"Now, I have a deeper understanding of the 200-meter individual medley event, compared to the Tokyo Games," said Wang, gold medalist of the Tokyo Olympics 200m individual medley event.

"I can make prompt adjustments based on different swimming strokes. In the winter I did some intensive training, trying to simulate the real competition environment, and I got a better sense of speed in the pool," he added.

"I will continue to work hard and get ready for the possible difficulties. I believe I can handle those challenges in the future."
