In an interview on Spanish radio program W Radio, CGTN's Wang Guan responded to the host's comparison of the Taiwan question to a "time bomb." Citing the Catalan independence movement that occurred in Spain in 2017, Wang pointed out that the leaders of the secessionist movement were immediately arrested and heavily sentenced by the Spanish government after engaging in separatist activities. China understands and supports the efforts made by the Spanish government to maintain national unity, ethnic solidarity and territorial integrity, opposing actions that seek to split the country and undermine the rule of law. Wang noted that China is simply employing the same legitimate reasoning, and that the Taiwan region is part of China.
