Top animated films from across the globe were recognized at the Golden Monkey King Awards on Wednesday, known as the "highest honor in Chinese animation," with 34 works celebrated.

The awards are a prestigious event at the 20th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival (CICAF) held in Hangzhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province.

Spanning five days, the 20th CICAF opened on Wednesday. The festival, themed "The Prime of Chinese Animation," has attracted more than 2,100 enterprises and institutions from more than 50 countries and regions in the world.

According to media reports, over 140,000 animated works, both domestic and international, will be showcased over the course of the festival.

This year's edition of the Golden Monkey King Awards, hosted by China Media Group, consists of three categories: the General Awards, the Promising Awards and the Animation Featuring Revolutionary Traditions Awards.

Following the call for submissions made on April 12, a total of 765 original animation works were received from 17 countries and regions including China, the United States, the United Kingdom and France, with 88 pieces shortlisted for final evaluation.

Among them, "Stories of Dunhuang," submitted by CCTV Animation Group, reproduces the grandeur and splendor of the millennium-old Dunhuang in vivid and diverse animation forms by resorting to the historical events that can represent the cultural exchanges between the ancient city and the Silk Road. The work was awarded the Gold Prize for General Award-Animated Series.

In addition, "Chang An" and "Seasons" won the Gold Prize for General Award-Animated Feature Film and General Award-Animated Short Film, respectively. "Mountains of the Wind Glow" won the Gold Prize for General Award-Comics and "Team of the Summit" took the Special Prize for Animation Featuring Revolutionary Traditions.

Twelve animated shorts and six comics were honored with the Promising Awards.
