The Global Urban and Rural Development Forum of Boao Forum For Asia is taking place in southwest China's Chengdu City from Thursday to Friday. Experts emphasize the significance of geographical indication products, such as Iberian ham and Bordeaux red wine, for the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Our reporter GUO TIANQI visited Hanyuan County in Sichuan Province, where high-quality cherries are bringing new economic development for locals.

Every year, from May to June, it is cherry ripening season in Hanyuan County, Ya'an City. People of the city are drawn to it and come in large numbers to experience the joy of harvest.

GUO TIANQI Hanyuan County, Ya'an City "Twelve hundred meters above sea level, the hilly terrain and the muddy soil are the most suitable conditions for growing cherries. Therefore, cherries produced in this village won the first place in the National Cherry Competition last year."

The county has planted over 4,000 hectares of cherry, and the annual output value can reach 150 million U.S. dollars. Since 2014, Hanyuan Cherry has been listed as a National Geographic Indication Product.

YANG DEZONG Deputy Secretary, Longchi Village Party Committee "After more than ten years of experimenting, the price of our cherries is getting higher and higher. All our cherries adhere to green agriculture norms. Now, the income of every household can increase by one-third every year."

The village set up a cherry company seven years ago in which 135 cherry-growing families are members.

FENG JIANHUA Manager, Longchi Village Cherry Company "We offer farmers planting techniques. If their product is up to our standards, we pay them more than the market price. Our company makes about nine million RMB a year in revenue and two million RMB in profit."

High-quality cherries are always in short supply. Every day, there are 2,000 boxes of cherries of the best quality, flying from the tip of a tree to all over the nation through cold chain. These can arrive in one to three days.

"I used to grow potato, but now I only grow cherries. Besides selling directly to the village company, we also sell them online."

At the Global Urban and Rural Development Forum of Boao Forum For Asia, experts also stressed that the basis of rural revitalization is ecological protection and livability. So, perhaps, cherry planting in mountainous areas is a good practice. GUO TIANQI, CGTN, Ya'an, Sichuan Province.
