Japan beat China 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17 at the FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League on Friday night in Macao.
The hosts won the second set after losing the first but Japan then took two frames in a row to lock in victory.
Japan's captain Sarina Koga had a game-high 25 points, while China's Li Yingying finished with a team-high 23 points.
"We played relatively passive in the whole game and did not have a good rhythm," said Li after the match, adding that Japan's defense was tenacious.
With the win, Japan are closing in on China in the World Rankings, moving from eighth to seventh, while the PRC remained sixth.
China will take on Thailand on Saturday and then Italy on Sunday.
