Zhang Zhilei (R) knocked out Deontay Wilder in a 5 vs. 5 event between Matchroom and Queensbury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, June 1, 2024. /CFP
China's Zhang Zhilei scored the biggest win of his career in Riyadh when he knocked out former world heavyweight champion American Deontay Wilder in a 5 vs. 5 event between Matchroom and Queensbury on Saturday.
Zhang connects with a perfectly timed counter right hook that spins Wilder in a daze. With Wilder defenseless, the 41-year-old Chinese sprints in and smashes him with another right hand that plants the American hard on the canvas. Wilder somehow is on his feet before the count of 10, but his legs are unsteady and the referee wisely waves off the fight at 1:51 of Round 5. The "Big Bang" Zhang is now back on what he called the "road to the champion." The victory also makes it a clean sweep for Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions.
