The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said it opposes any words or deeds that exacerbate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The comments came in response to reports the Republic of Korea (ROK) approved the suspension of a military agreement with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday.

Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Wednesday that the Chinese side has taken note of the relevant reports.

Maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula is in the common interest of all parties, said Mao.

The situation on the peninsula has been tense recently, with confrontation between the parties concerned intensifying, she said. "We are concerned about the current developments."

China has always been committed to maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula, supporting the parties concerned in improving their relations through dialogue and opposing any words or deeds that aggravate tensions, said Mao.

The spokesperson expressed hope that the parties concerned will remain calm, exercise restraint, be prudent in their words and play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula.

The ROK on Tuesday approved the full suspension of the September 19 military agreement with the DPRK during a cabinet meeting after deciding on it in the previous day, according to Yonhap news agency.

The suspension is in response to the DPRK's decision to send hundreds of balloons carrying trash over the border, said the ROK.

The agreement, which prohibits all hostile acts across the border, was signed by the defense chiefs of the two sides during the 2018 inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang.
