England have confirmed their 26-player squad for the UEFA European Championship after manager Gareth Southgate cut seven players, including Jack Grealish of Manchester City and Harry Maguire of Manchester United, from the provisional list.

The seven cuts were: Grealish, Maguire, James Maddison of Tottenham Hotspur, Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah of Liverpool, Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton and James Trafford of Burnley.

The Three Lions took in a lot of young blood as 12 of the players traveling to Germany have never taken part in an major international tournament. Half of the players who competed at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 were left out of the latest squad.

"Of course, we [have] a lot of changes from Qatar if you go back as far as that," Southgate told reporters on Thursday. "The decision on picking a squad is always a moment in time. Sometimes you perhaps regenerate the group more than you were expecting a couple of months ago but that has already brought a hunger, a competitiveness and the key now is we have to bond as a group."

Maguire missed out because of a calf injury, but his United teammate Luke Shaw, who hasn't played since February due to injury, was selected. Both Grealish and Maddison struggled at their clubs this season. Grealish only started in 10 Premier League games for City; Maddison scored just one goal since he returned from injury at the end of January.

"There are some players who have been with us a long time where those bonds are really strong and we've got to find that," Southgate said. "The group have got to work together. They've got to realize that when we pick teams, the 15 who are disappointed will be key each match to us doing well because a lot of them are going to come into the game."
