Mexican goalkeeper Luis Malagon will not participate in the upcoming Copa America after suffering a muscular injury, which will take up to four weeks to recover. His position in the national team will be taken by Carlos Acevedo.

"I can confirm the news regarding Angel Malagon," Mexico's manager Jaime Lozano said on Friday. "Unfortunately he's been injured and he had to return to his club. There won't be enough time for him to recover and take part in the Copa America. We have already spoken to Carlos Acevedo, who will take (Malagon's) place for the Copa America."

Neither Malagon nor Acevedo has made many appearances for Mexico. and the team's other two goalies, Julio Gonzalez and Raul Rangel, were both uncapped prior to June. Rangel started in their 4-0 loss to Uruguay earlier this week.

Mexico's long-serving goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has played 150 games, the third-most in national team history, for "El Tricolor." However, he was excluded from the roster along with Hirving Lozano and Raul Jimenez.

"We are two years away from our World Cup," Mexico's sporting director Duilo Davino said. "We have our spot secured and we want to take advantage of this great opportunity to not think about the immediacy of the result and project our path to 2026."

This year's Copa America will begin on June 20 and end on July 14 in the U.S. and Mexico are in Group B with Ecuador, Venezuela and Jamaica. The last time they competed at the tournament was in 2016 and they made the quarterfinals. They were runners-up in both 1993 and 2001.
