Over the years, only the outer face of Pingyao's ancient city wall has been covered with bricks. The inside is simply rammed earth. It was designed to be a living, breathing structure. The weather in Pingyao is relatively dry, and a brick wall would have restricted the flow of fresh air for people to breathe.
