Editor's Note: Armed conflicts across the globe threaten the lives of millions of civilians while ongoing regional tensions are like a tinderbox ready to ignite. True to its mission, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is in the front line of emergency response to provide humanitarian assistance and alleviate human suffering. How does the ICRC address overwhelming needs? How is China contributing to the organization's humanitarian work? In this edition of Leaders Talk, CMG's Zou Yun sat down in Geneva with Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza. "I was shattered by what I saw in Gaza," she reckons, lamenting the social collapse following months of conflicts. Spoljaric underlines ICRC's neutrality principle and its strict adherence to the common objective of international human rights law and international humanitarian law. Its mission is to protect the lives and dignity of all human beings and find a pathway back to peace and development, she notes. Spoljaric also asserts that humanitarianism is "firmly anchored" in Chinese traditional culture and praises Chinese President Xi Jinping for being committed to humanitarianism and promoting international humanitarian law.
