An Israeli official said on Tuesday that Hamas has rejected the U.S.-drafted proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release in the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli media reports.

"This evening, Israel received, via the mediator, the Hamas's response. In its response, Hamas has rejected the proposal for a hostage release that was presented by President Biden," the Times of Israel quoted an anonymous Israeli official.

The official said that Hamas had changed the main parameters of the proposal.

According to a Reuters report, a Hamas official said the group had merely reiterated its longstanding demands not met by the proposed plan.

The Hamas official, who declined to be identified, said the group in its response reaffirmed its stance that a ceasefire must lead to a permanent end to hostilities in Gaza, withdrawal of Israeli forces, reconstruction of the Palestinian enclave and release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

"We reiterated our previous stance. I believe there are no big gaps. The ball is now in the Israeli courtyard."
