Chengdu and Melbourne forge a new era of friendship and cooperation

China’s city of Chengdu and Australia’s Melbourne officially established a friendly cooperative relationship in March 2024.

Chengdu is the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, renowned for its rich history and unique cultural charm. Chengdu boasts over 3,000 years of history and is a birthplace of the ancient Shu civilization. The city's famous historical sites, such as Qingcheng Mountain, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, and Wuhou Shrine, add to its distinctive historical appeal.

Besides natural and historical attractions, giant pandas are also a hallmark of the city. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding attracts many tourists from around the world, offering a unique opportunity to interact closely with giant pandas.

In recent years, exchanges and cooperation between Chengdu and Melbourne have become increasingly close. As both cities are renowned for their sports and livability, the future promises to see Chengdu and Melbourne deepen their friendship and achieve mutual development in more areas.

Known as Australia's most populous city to date, Melbourne has an excellent environment, with a green coverage rate of 40 percent, which has earned it the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor Award. It has been consistently rated as one of world's most livable cities.

As the first city in the southern hemisphere to host the Summer Olympics, Melbourne now has numerous international events such as the Australian Open, Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, and the Melbourne Cup horse race. Melbourne is also an industrial powerhouse, encompassing heavy machinery, textiles, paper manufacturing, electronics, chemicals, and metal processing industries, and with significant development in the automobile, clothing, and food industries.

Chengdu and Melbourne, as representatives of city relationships, have provided valuable experiences for other cities through their deepening cooperation. In the future, with the continued strengthening of their partnership, Chengdu and Melbourne are expected to achieve even more fruitful results in the cultural, tourism, and economic fields, contributing further to the development of China-Australia friendly relations.
