China is willing to strengthen dialogue and properly handle differences with both the Australian government and opposition to work towards new progress in their comprehensive strategic partnership, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said on Monday.

Li made the remarks when meeting with Australian Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton in Canberra.

The stable and continuous development of China-Australia relations best serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is conducive to regional peace, stability and prosperity, said Li.

He noted that China-Australia relations have long been at the forefront of China's relations with Western countries since the establishment of their diplomatic ties in 1972, with fruitful practical cooperation bringing benefits to the two peoples. This fully demonstrates that the development of China and Australia is an important opportunity for each other, he added.

Li expressed the hope that all sectors in Australia can continue to view China's development in an objective way, support the deepening of mutually beneficial cooperation, and contribute to the healthy and stable development of bilateral ties.

China is also willing to work with Australia to safeguard multilateralism, advocate free trade, and address global challenges such as climate change, said the Chinese premier.

Noting the vital importance of the Australia-China relationship, Dutton said that his party is pleased to see China's development and prosperity, regards China as a partner, and hopes that Australia-China ties will develop steadily.

The Australian opposition is ready to communicate with the Chinese side to enhance bilateral relations, he said.
