It's often said that more ancient painted sculptures are to be found in Shanxi than in any other province in China. The best known painted sculptures are the perfect combination of religious and folk art, as seen in those housed in the Shuanglin Temple in Pingyao. To preserve these precious relics, artist Liang Changzhen has replicated many of them and displayed them in his museum.
