The Chinese Ministry of Commerce "firmly opposes" the UK's sanctions on five Chinese companies and urges the British side to immediately correct its wrongdoings, according to a statement on Wednesday.

On June 13, the UK government announced sanctions against five Chinese entities for alleged involvement with Russia.

The UK has disregarded China's representations and the positive momentum in Chinese-British economic and trade relations and insists on listing Chinese enterprises, which has taken a toll on bilateral ties, the ministry said.

The UK's imposition of unilateral sanctions, with no basis in international law and no authorization from the United Nations, is a typical act of "long-arm jurisdiction," it said, urging Britain to cease targeting Chinese companies without restrictions or conditions.

The Chinese government will take firm and strong measures to defend the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises, the ministry said.
