In South Korea, a large number of young people today are fighting an inner battle, often all by themselves. The term hikikomori was coined in Japan in the 1990s to describe this phenomenon of social withdrawal. Today many municipal governments in South Korea are using incentives to try to help these young people to step out of the shadows, reintegrate back into society and hopefully live a fuller life.
