Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, held talks with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hanoi on Thursday.

Trong said Vietnam highly values its traditional relationship with Moscow.

The international community needs to strengthen bilateral and multilateral dialogue and cooperation, with the United Nations at its core, to jointly develop the socio-economic system and address both traditional and non-traditional security challenges, he said.

Putin said developing a comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam is a priority in Russia's foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific region, and his visit to Vietnam will create new momentum for bilateral ties.

Both sides will continue to enhance mutual understanding and trust, develop cooperation in the economy, trade, investment, and science and technology, and strengthen defense and security cooperation, he added.

The two sides also agreed to promote cooperation in other areas such as agriculture, education and training, culture, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and at the local level.
