Kylian Mbappe will not be allowed to wear a three-color mask that features France's national flag when he returns to play at the UEFA European Championship in Germany.

The French superstar broke his nose in his side's 1-0 win over Austria on Monday. Mbappe exited the game after suffering the injury. Though he won't undergo surgery, he still needs to wear facial protection on the pitch.

Mbappe wore a mask with the famous French 'tricolore' in light training with his teammates on Thursday.

However, UEFA rules allow only single-color masks for players in games, unless a special exemption is obtained. "Medical equipment worn on the field of play must be a single color and free of team and manufacturer identification," reads a portion of UEFA's regulations.

France coach Didier Deschamps told reporters on Thursday that he was hopeful Mbappe could return to play against the Netherlands on Friday.

"Everything is going well, after the shock we had. He was able to take part in some light exercises yesterday, and that will be the same this evening. Everything is evolving in the right direction," Deschamps said. "We'll do all we can to ensure that he'll be available tomorrow."

According to ESPN, Mbappe may have to stay on the bench against the Dutchmen and not return to the field until their final group game against Poland on June 25.

Both France and the Netherlands won their first games in Group D at Euro 2024. Therefore, the result of Friday's contest may play a big role in deciding which teams will advance to the knockout stage from the group.
