China's population of Hainan gibbons, the world's rarest primate and listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, has increased from 37 in 2022 to 42 this year. Hainan gibbons are only found in the rainforests of the southern Chinese island province of Hainan. Chinese professionals have been working on preserving the gibbons' habitats and monitoring their living status.
