The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday urged South Korea to quickly probe the cause of the Hwaseong battery plant fire, treat the injured, manage the aftermath and assist the families of Chinese victims.

"We deeply mourn the victims and extend our sincere condolences to the injured and their families," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a press conference, responding to questions about the deaths of several Chinese citizens in a fire at a lithium battery plant in Hwaseong, South Korea.

Mao Ning emphasized the Chinese government's deep concern over the significant casualties of Chinese nationals caused by the fire.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in South Korea promptly activated the consular protection emergency mechanism, fully engaging in the emergency response, she said. Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Xing Haiming rushed to the scene to assess the situation, monitor search and rescue efforts and discuss the aftermath with South Korean authorities.

"We will continue to do our best in follow-up work," said the spokesperson.

According to South Korean authorities, a fire on June 24 at a battery plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, resulted in 22 fatalities, including 17 presumed to be Chinese nationals. The fire also injured eight people, including one Chinese citizen with minor injuries who has received medical treatment.

On Tuesday, South Korean police opened an investigation into the five people in charge of the battery plant. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and confirm casualty details.
