The Chinese Cycling Association announced on Friday the squad for the Paris Summer Olympics with BMX freestylers Sun Jiaqi and Deng Yawen making the list through two stops of the Olympic Qualifier Series in Shanghai and Budapest.
Sun and Deng rounded off the podium in the Shanghai stop behind teammate Sun Sibei, who shockingly fell short after she failed to reach the Budapest final. 19-year-old Sun Jiaqi and 18-year-old Deng came from other disciplines before they quickly helped form one of the best teams in the world.
China first put together a BMX Freestyle squad in 2018, and within six years, the youngsters have won numerous awards. Sun Jiaqi was China's first BMX World Cup champion, and Deng is regarded as the most comprehensive rider on the team. And Sun Sibei, who won't be seen in Paris, was the runner-up at the World Championships last year, where Chinese dominated the 2nd to 6th places. As the Games draw near, qualifier Sun Jiaqi reflected on her performance in Shanghai, but knows she has lots of work to do to shine in Paris.
