The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the world's largest regional organization in terms of geographic scope and population, with China, Russia and India onboard, is playing a pivotal role in promoting sci-tech exchange across Eurasia.

For the most recent instance, the SCO in June established a new alliance about city information modeling (CIM), a powerful concept that transforms the way we plan, design, construct and manage cities.

The alliance, jointly founded by 11 Chinese institutions including the China Academy of Building Research and Tsinghua University, aims to provide end-to-end CIM technology to SCO members.

By adopting the Chinese approach, which has led to remarkable infrastructure projects globally, cities within the SCO are poised for intelligent and precise management using tech innovations like digital twins.

"We will leverage tech innovations like digital twin to manage cities digitally, intelligently and precisely," said Li Gang, deputy secretary of the SCO Demonstration Zone Party Committee in Qingdao City, east China's Shandong Province.

Qingdao, which hosts a pivotal area for trade between SCO members, is witnessing more technologies being shared along the trade routes. In mid-May, another alliance for industrial digitalization was formed in the city to promote the use of artificial intelligence (AI) based on large data models among SCO members.

The initial 83 members of the alliance include internet carriers like China Mobile, data center solution providers like Huawei and internet of things (IoT) service providers like Haier Cosmoplat.

At the national level, the Digital Technology Platform (DTP) for SCO countries was established in September 2023 to promote the use of digital tech. The DTP is a comprehensive cooperation mechanism for SCO members.

E-commerce giants like Xiaomi, JD.com and Lenovo have joined the platform to push forward the digitalization of the Belt and Road areas. They promised to share their best practices in the use of AI, big data, blockchain and cloud computing with all SCO members in a fair and respectful manner.

The SCO's commitment to digital transformation underscores its vision for a connected and innovative future. With the CIM alliance and the DTP, the SCO is not only embracing digital transformation but also empowering its members to thrive in an interconnected world.
